At Computex 2019, ARM has showcased its CPU designs Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 which is built for next generation smartphones and laptops. Arm Cortex-A77 CPU is the 2nd generation design brining substantial performance over cortex-A76. There is an improvement in 20% IPC (instructions per cycle) over Cortex-A76 Arm claims, the improvement in IPC boosts the performance of next generation devices and helps CPUs to deliver Machine Learning and AR (Augmented reality ) / VR (Virtual reality) experiences. Cortex-A77 will support 5G devices. 5G is an essential requirement for intensive computing like ML, AR. This will cater to faster speeds, 8k resolution streaming, 360 degree video and hyper capacity (5 to 20 Gbps). This CPU design will maintain best in class power and area efficiency over previous generation designs. Arm Mali-G77 GPU is based on Valhall architecture which delivers high end graphics at increased efficiency. It is 30% increase in performance density and 30% better energy efficiency over the previous design. On top of that, Mali-G77 also brings a 60% improvement to machine learning performance. Mali-G77 performs complex ML tasks faster on the devices rather than sending them to cloud for processing thus increasing the performance and limited / fewer security concerns.
